How I learned to let my workers lead

Updated: Jul 9, 2021

In this article business owner Ralph Stayer illustrates how organizational transformation starts with transformation of the company’s vision and leadership at the highest level. Stayer argues that to achieve these transformations, nothing matters more than the goal, and being able to articulate that vision clearly. Using the vision as the primary driver for action and decision making, leaders can steer an organization towards that end and empower workers to take responsibility and make decisions that support the vision and goals. Stayer demonstrates the transformation with examples and a timeline of the transformation which includes both successes and failures.

Having read this article a few times and completed MSC 529 a message to me from this article is that “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” It’s not enough to hope that one day I will become a leader, or that things in an organization will change for the better. It takes a vision and a goal to begin and lead a transformation. And that a dimension of strong leadership is an ability to communicate the vision with your organization in a way that takes hold in people’s minds and motivates them to take charge of their part in that transformation. In my final paper for MSC 529 I spelled out my own vision of leadership in the context of my own workplace, and future workplaces. Stayer met with several roadblocks and still realized great success. An important reminder that the best laid plans are not without setbacks and resilience.
