Summer 2020
The Discursive Ethical Framework is an end of term writing assignment where students are asked to describe and defend an ethical framework for an organization and argue how it will guide ethical practice for its employees. The argument explores the underlying values of the organization set-forth by its ethical framework and its relationship to real world challenges and organizational goals.
The intended outcome of the assignment was to illustrate for students the difficulty in developing an ethical framework for organizations and the compounded difficulty of uniformly enforcing standards and maintaining the values of the framework without acting tyrannical. At the end of the day, individuals within organizations must be trusted and empowered to serve the organization and the greater good, and not worry that their every move is being evaluated for compliance. At the same time, individuals should not presume that they can play fast and loose with the ethical judgement so long as they don’t break laws or harm others. The framework should provide both structure and agency for individuals, and the group and accommodate multicultural difference, and it’s a very tall order.
